A Brief History

Our History

The Journey of a Century, from hunting expeditions and resettlement to a thriving community, 1927 – 2027.

A Brief History

A Vision
Actualized

The Gbede people are a sub-group of the Okun Yoruba of Kogi State. Oral tradition traces their origin to three brothers from Ile-Ife who came north on hunting expeditions; the eldest founded Igbo Ode, which in time became known as Gbede. Around it grew settlements including Ibiti, Ilokun and Oka.

Between 1790 and 1890, Nupe raids destroyed more than seventy settlements across the land. When the raids ended in 1897, the survivors returned and began to coalesce into larger communities for safety, and out of that resolve, a new town was born.

The Origins & Early Settlements

Rooted in the story of the Gbede people, an Okun Yoruba sub-group. Oral tradition traces their origin to three brothers from Ile-Ife on hunting expeditions; the eldest founded Igbo Ode, later known as Gbede.

The Nupe Incursion

Nupe raids between 1790 and 1890 destroyed over 70 settlements. When the raids ended in 1897, the survivors returned and began to coalesce into larger settlements for safety.

The Formation in 1927

On February 27, 1927, C.M.S. church leaders led by Pa Daniel Ajileye Bello resolved to found a new settlement. First Aluju Afara, then Gilgal, it was renamed Ayetoro, “the world is at peace”, in 1929.

Growth & Legacy

A kindergarten in 1929, a primary school in 1946, a community high school in 1979, electricity in 1981 and a post office in 1991, a century of self-help and community-led development.
